eye tracking

Advertising models based on 'eye tracking'

Pay-per-gaze! Advertising models in the future may be based on a 'Gaze Tracking System' that monitors eye movements to pin down what the user is looking at and charge advertisers accordingly.
The move from 'clicks' to pupil dilations may come after technology giant Google's patent for a Gaze Tracking System became public last week.
Pay-per-click is an internet advertising model currently used to direct traffic to websites, in which advertisers pay the publisher - typically a website owner – when the ad is clicked.
Originally filed in May 2011, the patent presents an idea for wearers of a head mounted device - and in 2013 observers are guessing this may be Google Glass – to have gaze tracked so that the system can pin down exactly what the user is looking at and even the emotional responses via pupil dilation, phys.org reported.
Information about where the user was gazing when viewing the external scene would be sent over to a server. An image recognition algorithm would be executed on the scene images to identify items within the external scenes viewed by the user.
A gazing log tracking the identified items viewed by the user would be generated.
"To date eye tracking systems have mostly been limited to research endeavours because of the intrusiveness, high cost, and reliability of these systems," according to the patent.
"A technique and system that can provide a reliable, low cost, and unobtrusive, eye tracking system could have a variety of useful everyday applications," it said.
Advertisers could be charged according to the number of views an ad received while wearing Glass, both offline and online. Google's patent refers to the process as "pay-per-gaze" advertising.
Google plans to set up an advertising model of pay-per-gaze.
"Under a pay per gaze advertising scheme, advertisers are charged based upon whether a user actually viewed their advertisement," the patent explained.

Watch-Like Phone

Samsung  Introducing  Watch-Like Phone Next Month

Samsung Electronics Co. (005930) will introduce a wristwatch-like device named the Galaxy Gear next month that can make phone calls, surf the Web and handle e-mails, according to two people familiar with the matter.
The Galaxy Gear will be powered by Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android operating system and go on sale this year to beat a potentially competing product from Apple Inc. (AAPL), the people said. The device will be unveiled Sept. 4, two days before the IFA consumer electronics show begins in Berlin, one of the people said, asking not to be identified because the plans are private.

Aug. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Benedict Evans, analyst at Enders, discusses word that Samsung will introduce its smartphone-like wrist watch next month, what it means to the mobile marketplace and what he sees for the future of Apple. He speaks on Bloomberg Television's "The Pulse."
Asia’s biggest technology company is racing other electronics makers, including Sony Corp. (6758) to create a new industry of wearable devices as the market for top-end handsets nears saturation. The global watch industry will generate more than $60 billion in sales this year, and the first companies to sell devices that multitask could lock customers into their platform, boosting sales of smartphones, tablets and TVs.
“It will carve a niche for sure as this is an initial product in the market,” said Chung Chang Won, an analyst at Nomura Holdings Inc. in Seoul. “Wearable devices could be one of the trends in the smartphone market, but I’m not sure yet whether watches or glasses will set the trend.”
The Galaxy Gear being released next month won’t have a flexible display, though the company is continuing to work on developing a bendable screen, one person said. It will be unveiled the same day as Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3, a combination smartphone and tablet computer.

Apple Watch

Apple had a team of about 100 designers working on watch-like device, two people familiar with the matter said in February. The Cupertino, California-based company is seeking to introduce its device this year, one of the people familiar said at the time.
Samsung became the world’s largest smartphone maker last year, overtaking Apple. The Suwon, South Korea-based company had about 33 percent of the global smartphone market in the second quarter, while the iPhone maker fell to a three-year low as more consumers chose inexpensive handsets from Chinese makers, according to researcher Strategy Analytics.
Samsung posted second-quarter earnings July 26 that missed analyst estimates as sales growth for the flagship Galaxy S4 was curbed by slowing demand for high-end handsets. Shares have fallen 15 percent this year in Seoul trading, compared with a 4 percent decline in the benchmark Kospi index.
Samsung released the Galaxy S4 smartphone in April and plans at least two other high-end handsets this year, including a device using the Tizen operating system.
Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile business, said in a March interview the company was working on a watch device.

App to connect long-distance lovers

App to connect long-distance lovers

Researchers have developed a new app that lets long-distance lovers listen to each other's heartbeats regardless of the distance between them.

Pillow Talk, a combination of a wristband and app from UK design company Little Riot, connects partners separated by miles by transmitting their heartbeats in real time.

The wristband picks up the wearer's heartbeat and transmits it via Bluetooth to the iOS or Android app.

"You are connected directly to your partner via the app; you will receive his/her heartbeat, and they will receive yours.

"By plugging in your headphones or the pillow speaker you can lie in bed and hear the realtime heartbeat of your loved one. The result is an intimate interaction between two lovers, regardless of the distance between them," the company said on its website.

Pillow Talk began life in a slightly different form as a university product of founder Joanna Montgomery in 2010. The project has since received more than 750,000 views on Youtube and worldwide attention, the company said.

Wikipedia go ‘secure’

Wikipedia will go ‘secure’ to beat NSA surveillance

Just days after reports revealed that National Security Agency (NSA) in the US actively looked at what people read on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation announced on its website that it would implement HTTPS for logged-in users. < The foundation, a non-profit organization, manages Wikipedia. The S in HTTPS stands for secure. Two days ago, Guardian newspaper revealed that with the help of a tool called XKeyscore, NSA was monitoring web users who accessed Wikipedia, the world's 7th most popular website. Wikimedia said that to start with, it would offer HTTPS connection to all logged-in users from August 21. It will then gradually roll-out HTTPS for all users as well as implement additional security measures to make it harder for governments to snoop on Wikipedia users. However, it did not specify any deadlines for the additional security measures. Following the Guardian report, Jimmy Wales, the co-founder of Wikipedia, had revealed on Twitter that the website was planning to switch to HTTPS from HTTP but there were a few bugs that had delayed the process. "Our current architecture cannot handle HTTPS by default, but we've been incrementally making changes to make it possible. Since we appear to be specifically targeted by XKeyscore, we'll be speeding up these efforts," Wikimedia said on its website. On Friday Wales announced the Wikimedia decision and tweeted, "I challenge the rest of the industry to join us. Encryption is a human rights issue." HTTPS is more secure compared to HTTP. Websites using HTTPS establish a secure connection between their servers and the user's computer and greatly minimize the privacy risk. The secure connection means that third parties like government agencies or internet service providers (ISPs) can not read the content of data that a However, the government agencies, hackers and internet service providers can still collect this data and possibly read it if they can break the encryption. Initially, only banks and other organizations mindful of cyber security risks used HTTPS. But gradually email service providers and e-commerce websites started using it on their login pages. Currently, popular websites like Google, Facebook and Twitter use HTTPS but the majority of websites, including big ones like Yahoo! still rely on HTTP.
